Track 10: Mama

Believe in Dreams by Flyleaf

I know days will come and go
And baby, I'll grow old but I will die
For now is it worth it to be sad?
It is harder to be glad to be alive

But the trouble I have caused, I wonder
Where do I belong, is it here?

Believe in dreams you love so much
Let the passion of your heart, make them real
And tell all the ones you love
Everything about the love you feel

Laugh about the past and secretly
Wish we could go back and save the child

As I look around this room
Seeing worried eyes that know
It's time we cannot buy
Was this worth the time to write?

Was this worth the time to write?
Was this worth the time to write?
Was this worth the time to write?

I believe in dreams
I believe in dreams
I believe in dreams
I believe in you

Believe in dreams you love so much
Let the passion of your heart, make them real
And tell all the ones you love
Anything and everything you feel

I believe in dreams
I believe in dreams
I believe in dreams

I chose this song because I can picture this song playing in the background of the scene between Mama and Walter when she gives Walter her money. Mama is not saying she is happy about what Walter wants to do, but she is saying she supports HIM and the fact that he has a dream he wishes to obtain. It is a very touching scene and i feel this song has the right emotional feel to it to be appropriate for the scene. I think it has the right amount of emotional emphasis to show how desperate Mama is to show her son her support.

Track 9: Walter

I dreamed a Dream (from Lez Miserables) by Hayley Westrena

I dreamed a dream in days gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted.
There was no ransom to be paid,
No song unsung, no wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame.

He slept a summer by my side,
He filled my days with endless wonder.
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came.

And still I dream he'll come to me,
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that can not be
And there are storms we can not weather.

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living,
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed...

I chose this song because i feel like this song represents how Walter felt when Mama told everyone that she spent the money on a house. He felt crushed. Betrayed. Sorrowful. He basically saw it as his own mother, someone he loved and is supposed to love him, killed his dream of being able to support his own family and to become something in the world. This song is a person looking back on happier times when they were full of dreams and were naive, and how reality and life crushed it. Walter was full of passion and his dream was powerful... until it was crushed when Mama said no.

Track 8: Ruth and Walter

Falling by the Civil Wars

Haven't you seen me sleep walking?
'Cause I've been holding your hand
Haven't you noticed me drifting?
Oh, let me tell you, I am

Tell me it's nothing
Try to convince me
That I'm not drowning
Oh let me tell you, I am

Please, please tell me you know
I've got to let you go
I can't help falling
Out of love with you

Why am I feeling so guilty?
Why am I holding my breath?
Worry 'bout everyone but me
I just keep losing myself

Tell me it's nothing
Try to convince me
That I'm not drowning
Oh let me tell you, I am

Please, please tell me you know
I've got to let you go
I can't help falling
Out of love with you

Won't you read my mind?
Don't you let me lie here
And die here

Please, please tell me you know
I've got to let you go
I can't help falling
Out of love with you

Haven't you noticed?
I'm sleepwalking

I chose this song for Ruth and Walter because it is almost like the singer is begging for her lover to save their relationship. "Haven't you seen me sleep walking?/'Cause I've been holding your hand/Haven't you noticed me drifting?/Oh, let me tell you, I am" Ruth and Walter have been drifting apart since even before the play started. They finally admitted that the love was almost gone during the middle of the play and that is what is being reflected in this song. Just like Ruth pleaded with Walter, this song pleads for a new chance. Its a last hope... and luckily the play has a happy ending between Ruth and Walter. This song represents Ruth and Walter's relationship for most of the play.

Track 7: Bennie

Bowling ball by superchic

"Bowling Ball"

Maybe he'll change, maybe things'll get better
Maybe it would be nice, if he wouldn't always put you down
Maybe things'll work out, but maybe they'll never
And i think you've given him the benefit of the doubt

You need that boy like a bowling ball dropped on your head
Which means not at all
You have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him
You need that boy like a bowling ball dropped on your head
Which means not at all
You have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him

Maybe he'll change, if you could be better
But maybe it's not your fault, he's checking out the waitress now
But someday you'll change, one day you're stronger
And you will have changed enough that it's time to get out

You need that boy like a bowling ball dropped on your head
Which means not at all
You have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him
You need that boy like a bowling ball dropped on your head
Which means not at all
You have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him

(you have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him)

You need that boy like a bowling ball dropped on your head
Which means not at all
You have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him
You need that boy like a bowling ball dropped on your head
Which means not at all
You have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him

(you have too much to give, to live to waste your time on him)

this is Bennie's attude about men in general. they are distractions. In the beginning she doesn't even know if she wants to be married. All she knows is that she wants and WILL be a doctor. And she doesn't see the use in being around men who don't understand that. She pretty much says, men come later, AFTER i become independent and successful.

track 6: Asagai

"Wake Me Up"
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me

[2x]
So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans

Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is the prize

[2x]
So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

Didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know (didn't know, didn't know)

To me this is an idealist song, living in a dream and loving life. This is exactly Asagai's attitude. He doesn't agree about all the divisons, and believes in freedom. He is also very aware that what happens may not be what he wants. He admits that he very well could grow to become a tirant and would hope that a young idealist would slit his throat for the benifit of his people. "I don't know where the journey will end, but i know where to start." He has his goals and his desires... freedom for his people and Beneatha.

Track 5: george murchison

"That Don't Impress Me Much"
I've known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart
But you've got being right down to an art
You think you're a genius-you drive me up the wall
You're a regular original, a know-it-all
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're something else

Okay, so you're a rocket scientist
That don't impress me much
So you got the brain but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night
That don't impress me much

I never knew a guy who carried a mirror in his pocket
And a comb up his sleeve-just in case
And all that extra hold gel in your hair oughtta lock it
'Cause Heaven forbid it should fall outta place

Oh-oo-oh, you think you're special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're something else

Okay, so you're Brad Pitt
That don't impress me much
So you got the looks but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night
That don't impress me much

You're one of those guys who likes to shine his machine
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in
I can't believe you kiss your car good night
C'mon baby tell me-you must be jokin', right!

Oh-oo-oh, you think you're special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you're something else

Okay, so you've got a car
That don't impress me much
So you got the moves but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm in the middle of the night

That don't impress me much
You think you're cool but have you got the touch
Don't get me wrong, yeah I think you're alright
But that won't keep me warm on the long, cold, lonely night
That don't impress me much

Okay, so what do you think you're Elvis or something...
Oo-Oh-Oh
That don't impress me much!

Oh-Oh-Oh-Oh-No
Alright! Alright!

You're Tarzan!
Captain Kirk maybe.
John Wayne.
Whatever!
That don't impress me much!

I chose this song for George Murchison because he thinks he is every girl's dream. He is rich. He is smart. He doesn't understand why Beneatha doesn't just be a normal girl and be head over heels for him or sit quietly and be a trophy girlfriend. He doesn't impress Beneatha at all and she doesn't really like him much. To me this song pretty much sums up how Beneatha feels about George.

Track 4: Beneatha

Me Against The World by Superchic

Wanna quit and give up
Simon says to pack it up
Shot down from all sides
Don't know why I try
So take this and kiss it
Goodbye won't miss it
I wanna go back to L.A.
I don't belong that's what they say

They said don't try to change the world
You're just a girl
So it's...me against the world today
I'm gonna do it my own way
And though nobody understands
I'm gonna make a one girl stand
It's not Independence Day
I can't waste time on what they say
If we believe when we have faith
We're gonna change the world someday

Back again one more time
Couldn't keep me down last time
Leaving what I know on faith
To take on the world and make waves
Still standing defiant
Maybe me against the giants
L.A. wasn't built in a day
Games going long but I still play

They said don't try to change the world
You're just a girl
So it's...me against the world today
I'm gonna do it my own way
And though nobody understands
I'm gonna make a one girl stand
It's not Independence Day
I can't waste time on what they say
If we believe when we have faith
We're gonna change the world someday

[echo] If we believe, when we have faith
We're gonna change the world someday

They said don't try to change the world
You're just a girl
So it's...me against the world today
I'm gonna do it my own way
And though nobody understands
I'm gonna make a one girl stand
It's not Independence Day
I can't waste time on what they say
If we believe when we have faith
We're gonna change the world someday

I chose this song because to me it represent Bennie to a tee. Beneatha is a strong young woman determined to be a doctor. She wants to heal. To fix. To cure. She wants to "make waves".  She refuses to pay any mind to anyone who doubts her (I can't waste time with what they say) and is confident in what she wants. The way she sees it, its her against the world. She wants to be independent. This song is literally about a girl who decides not to back down from the challenges people/men throw at her and who does it her way. EXACTLY like Bennie.
